Technical Details

I acquired my aluminum shell CMI Ropewalker from K&R Adventure Gear in 200. I acquired another in 2017 as part of Bob Thrun's collection.

The aluminum shell version is 105 mm. tall, 91 mm. wide, 58 mm. thick, and weighs 196 g. The shell is made from 3.1 mm. aluminum alloy, cut and bent to shape, and soft anodized. The shell is asymmetrical, with the left side having a small extension to support the cable clamp. The clamp is bolted on with two Allen-head cap screws. The cam is painted aluminum alloy.

Each side of the shell is stamped with an up-pointing arrow, "UP," and "Cmi."

Comments

The CMI Ropewalker is a modified version of the Gibbs ascender design. The CMI is well made, and it incorporates some new ideas. The cable keeper is too heavy and too stiff for my taste. The mud grooves in the shell are interesting: mud normally isn't a problem for this kind of ascender and I wonder if the grooves are really necessary. The cam eye is too large for conveniently sewing the ascender to my foot slings. Despite these nit-picks, there is nothing "wrong" with the CMI; but I still prefer the Gibbs.

I acquired my stainless steel shell CMI Ropewalker from K&R Adventure Gear in 2001. I acquired another in 2017 as part of Bob Thrun's collection.

The stainless steel shell version is 105 mm. tall, 91 mm. wide, 58 mm. thick, and weighs 321 g. The shell is made from 3.1 mm. stainless steel sheet, cut and bent to shape. The shell is asymmetrical, with the left side having a small extension to support the cable clamp. The clamp is bolted on with two Allen-head cap screws. The cam is painted aluminum alloy.

Each side of the shell is stamped with an up-pointing arrow, "UP," and "Cmi."

Comments

This version uses a stainless steel shell. I can't justify the extra weight this brings.
